In the year 2005, Smoothfm began as ‘Vega 91.5’. The initial format of the station was music and talk. However, the station began broadcasting with very low ratings. Their target audience then was listeners aged between forty and sixty years. Vega showed a steady increase in ratings over the years peaking at five percent. At this time, they joined the big leagues competing against Triple-M and WS-FM. The station was rebranded in 2010 to Classic Rock. The station fired anchors such as Dickson and O’Neil in a bid to cut costs. They began playing continuous rock music while also airing regular sports, news and weather updates. In 2013, Smoothfm began broadcasting nationally to Brisbane, Perth, and Adelaide.
Although the Smoothfm network focuses mainly on Rock music, they have several shows. These shows include More Mellow Music on weekdays from 8 pm to midnight and Music Breakfast on 5.30 to 9 am on weekdays.
